Starts in Adelaide before 12 noon. Visit wineries in the McLaren Vale then drive through rolling countryside along the Fleurieu Peninsula. Kangaroo IslandDrive through picturesque farmland and native scrub on Kangaroo Island, visit an ingenious Eucalyptus Oil Distillery and take a ranger-guided walk to a sea-lion colony. Several short walks introduce the unique flora and fauna of the island. A longer walk leads to a remote fresh water lagoon brimming with noisy bird life. Wildlife Bonanza![]() The drive through Flinders Chase National Park will be a wildlife bonanza with likely sightings of koalas, kangaroos, wallabies, Cape Barren geese, fur seals, platypus and numerous birds. See fantastically shaped primeval blocks of granite at Remarkable Rocks. At Cape du Couedic stroll along boardwalks for a close encounter with fur seals as they frolic on the rocky shore, then escape the crowds on a walk to secluded Rocky River cove. Day 5 : Murray RiverEnjoy sightseeing in pioneering villages and at the mouth of the mighty Murray River. A circuit walk of windswept Granite Island, home to thousands of fairy penguins, can be finished with a ride on the historic horse-drawn buggy. A second walk treads an old Aboriginal path to an ancient canoe tree. Then drive into the vast semi-Outback. Overnight accommodation: Padthaway area Day 6 : Mount Gambier ![]() Drive through semi-Outback countryside past the birthplace of Mary MacKillop, Australia's only Catholic saint. T he route winds through the winery regions of Coonawarra and Penola. At Naracoorte Caves experience a 3D re-creation of the ancient fauna that were found in this important World Heritage cave system. At Mount Gambier, the Crater Lakes Walk skirts the rim of an extinct volcano, providing breathtaking views of what is now known as the blue Lake. Overnight accommodation: Mount Gambier Day 7 : Great Ocean Road Emerge from the semi-Outback onto the famous Great Ocean Road. Walk deep into the heart of volcanic Mt Eccles. The Manna gum forests are home to hundreds of koalas. Short walks in the afternoon take in fascinating geological formations with evocative names such as the Bay of Islands, Bay of Martyrs, London Bridge and the Grotto. Overnight accommodation: Port Campbell Day 8 : Great Ocean Road ![]() Drive the most spectacular section of the Great Ocean Road today. For millions of years the limestone cliffs here have been sculptured into a series of gorges, arches, islands and blowholes which you will explore on foot. Marvel at the Twelve Apostles and learn the amazing tale of survival of the Loch Ard, one of over 160 ships to come to grief along this treacherous coastline. Overnight accommodation: Lorne Day 9 : Melbourne Continue along the Great Ocean Road to the cosmopolitan city of Melbourne. On the way, the grand finale is a walk through yet another different environment!
